What is a .nef file?

A NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) file is Nikon's RAW format, carrying the untouched 12- or 14-bit sensor readout together with the camera settings recorded at capture. The exposure, white balance and picture-control choices are stored as metadata rather than baked in, which is what makes NEF files so flexible to edit.

You'll find .nef files coming from Nikon DSLRs and Z-series mirrorless bodies — the D750, D850, D7500 and the Z 5, Z 6, Z 7, Z 8 and Z 9 lines.

Why won't a .nef file open on my computer?

NEF files don't open in browsers or many stock viewers, and each new Nikon body needs updated codec or editor support — a new camera's files frequently won't open in older desktop software at all.
