What is a .raf file?

A RAF file is Fujifilm's RAW format. On most X-series cameras it carries data from Fujifilm's distinctive X-Trans sensor, whose non-Bayer color-filter layout needs a demosaic algorithm of its own — one reason RAF support varies so much between editors. The file also embeds Fujifilm's film-simulation metadata and a JPEG preview.

You'll find .raf files coming from Fujifilm X-series and GFX bodies — the X-T4, X-T5, X-H2, X100V and X100VI, and GFX medium-format cameras.

Why won't a .raf file open on my computer?

RAF files won't open in browsers or stock viewers, and because X-Trans demosaicing is unusual, even some RAW editors that nominally support RAF render it poorly or not at all for newer bodies.
